Only yesterday, we reached the base camp, set it up together and looked back on the last days and weeks. We have experienced and mastered many things together. But it has already been clear for some time that Noemi and eventually also Georg will only accompany us to this very point.
Noemi had already come to this conclusion earlier, Georg only a few days ago. Many personal signs simply did not align with what he had planned regarding the ascent of the world's highest mountain. In the end, he too felt like he needed to opt out. He and Noemi wrote the following for us: "Sometimes the path only becomes visible when you start walking." And now, on this journey, their path is clear: Independently, Noemi and Georg have decided to not climb Mount Everest at this point due to their physical and psychological conditions. A very courageous decision; quite personal and untouchable. I do not have to agree with it, but I must understand it! This is exactly what I find very, very difficult, despite obvious signs during the past several days. The farewell here in the base camp struck me emotionally. More than two years of shared preparations – not to say team building – are now over in only an instance.
Our mutual journey is over with one single step in the opposite direction. Hannes and I will now try it as a "tiny team." We know that due to our good preparation and experience, we can go this path together and that we also have a realistic chance to succeed. Noemi and Georg left after breakfast this morning, and our small team has broken apart. These moments of separation are too difficult to put into words. The situation isn't easy for any of us! Still, we try to have a forward-looking and positive attitude. We will make the best out of the situation and focus on our goal after this painful experience.
